2012 MTV Movie Awards

With host, Russell Brand, The 2012 MTV Movie Awards were a huge hit last night, June 3rd. With categories raging from Best Gut-Wrenching Performance to Best On-Screen Dirt bag, millions of viewers sat on their couches anxious to find out whether their favorite movie or actor would win the award they were nominated for. The nominees were announced May 1, and were voted on by fans and a panel of MTV executives.
“The Hunger Games” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1” were two movies that were battling for the top spot in 6 categories. “Hunger Games” walked away with 4 awards and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1” with 2 awards. “Bridesmaids” was also a movie that was nominated in multiple categories, winning 2 awards.
The MTV Generation Award, the highest honor MTV gives out, was awarded to Johnny Depp for his years and years of contribution to the film industry. Depp then grabbed his guitar and joined The Black Keys on stage for a rendition of Gold On The Ceiling. MTV also added a new award this year, The Trailblazer Award, which was awarded to Emma Stone for becoming so successful in Hollywood at such an early age.

Bringing Whitney Houston Back?

Just 3 months after Whitney Houston's tragic death, news of a new reality show is sweeping the nation. Houston was a famous singer; she grabbed the hearts of millions of fans of all ages, everywhere. Her hits include "I Will Always Love you" and her rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner". Whitney was the first person to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 11 with 7 consecutive singles. All of her top 10 hits reached number one. When the star overdosed on drugs and drowned in her bathtub, all her fans were devastated.
Now, 3 months later, a new reality show is set to show on Lifetime, “The Houston Family Chronicles”. The show will star Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina; mom, Cissy; sister-in-law and manager, Pat Houston; Pat’s daughter, Rayah; and Houston’s brother, Gary. Lifetime states the 10 episode series will follow the Houston family “as they take on their greatest challenge, supporting and guiding Bobbi Kristina as she faces the world alone, without the one person she relied on most, her Mother.”
The hit artist’s fans are not showing much support for this show and are outraged. There are many people freely expressing the fact that they feel the Houston family is exploiting themselves, taking advantage of Whitney’s passing. Many people do not feel it is right to broadcast the star’s legacy as a reality show so soon after her passing.
I’m excited to see the reactions once the show hits the air. I suspect there will be many unhappy watchers. Personally, I think it’s horrible to be very quick to take opportunity of a family member’s death to make money.

So Call Me Maybe?

If someone asked me what one of the catchiest songs playing on the radio right now is, without hesitation I'd immediately be able to say "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepson. The Canadian song writer became an international sensation when Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez tweeted about her new pop song. After being released September 20, 2011, Jepson’s hit song quickly became the number one song in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, in the top ten in Belgium, Norway, and The Netherlands, and number five on the US’s Billboard Hot 100.
Maybe one reason the song is such a hit with teens is because it portrays the typical crush every girl faces. The girl spots a hot boy but can’t work up the nerve to talk to him so she ends up making a fool of herself trying to get his attention. “Call Me Maybe’s” hilarious music video takes that struggle even further when Jepson finds out her hot neighbor she had been trying to impress is gay and only had eyes for the male guitar player in her band.
Although many people may find the repetitve lyrics of "Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here's my number, so call me, maybe?" highly annoying, I love it and tend to have it playing on repeat on my IPod.

One Direction

Recently, you may have noticed your Twitter timeline full of young fan-girls tweeting "@Harry_Styles follow me please!!!" or "I’m your biggest fan @Real_Liam_Payne!!!” Or maybe you've noticed the trending topics on Twitter such as “#Bring1DToUs” or the song “What Makes You Beautiful” playing every 20 minutes on Y100. The new hit British-Irish boy band, One Direction, has made their impact on the United States. Founded in August 2010, members Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles placed third in the most recent season of X-Factor, quickly making them famous all over the world. Although I’m sure their good looks and luscious locks contributed to their great success.
These 5 boys have made one of the fastest climbs to stardom, with their album “Up All Night” debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 176,000 copies in only its first week. They are the first UK group in history to make it to the top of The Billboard 200 with their first album. Not only has their music gone viral, but they have recently had guest appearances on both iCarly and Saturday Night Live, both last Saturday night, April 7. The band has been on their “Up All Night” tour since December 2011. They don’t make it to the U.S. until summer 2012 but their concerts are already practically sold out.
I have never considered myself a “Directioner” but I must admit that I have caught myself humming “What Makes You Beautiful” the past few days… Watch yourself Justin Bieber, you may have some competition!

Ultra Music Fest

To start off my blog about what's currently going on in the music world, I'll begin with Ultra Music Festival (UMF). Held last weekend, March 23-25, 2012, in our hometown of Miami, Florida, it has been the talk of the week. No, scratch that, teens all over Miami have been talking about it since "early bird" tickets went on sale October 1, 2011. The early bird tickets sold out within 20 minutes and all tickets were sold out as of January 8. UMF calls themselves "The World's Premiere Electronic Music Festival". With world renown electronic music artists performing such as Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, Avicii, Benny Benassi, Carl Cox, David Guetta, Kaskade, Skrillex, and Tiesto, UMF has been the winner of the DMA Best Music Event for 6 nonconsecutive years now out of the 14 years it has existed. The 2012 turnout has been the biggest yet with 165,000 people compared to the 45,000 people in 2005. Anyone who has a love for electronic music will have the time of their life at UMF, just as long as they don't mind standing face to face with strangers all around them that reek of sweat. People show up in crazy outfits, some half-naked, to enjoy the full experience of Miami's heat... with standing room only. Ultra Miami 2012 has ended with crazy stories that have gone viral, such as a girl lip-locking and dancing with a tree. Ultra 2013 dates have been released; March 22-24; GET READY MIAMI!
